    How To Maintain Our Air Pumps

    Air Pump

    The Bio-Pure Sewage Treatment System has no moving parts, it operates using an air pump which provides the extended aeration method used to break down sewage and discharge treated and clean effluent.

    These pumps need to be properly maintained to ensure performance is kept at its peak.

    We provide

    Service kits for most makes and models of pumps- if you wish to maintain the pump yourself.
    Large stockist of most air pumps
    We also offer service agreements where all aspects of maintenance are covered beyond just the air pump.
    Send the pump back to us and we can service, test and return.

    The air pumps provided in our Bio-Pure Sewage Treatment Systems, can be found under the 730mm square lid along with the alarm.

    Maintenance takes a small amount of time and will improve the life span of the pump saving you money in the long run.

    Identifying problems

    If your alarm is working correctly this will signal if there is lack of air pressure or power loss.

    Secoh and JDK Air pumps.

    A red service light will appear on the side of the pump if it detects a problem, this will often be due to the diaphragms splitting. This red light is also an indication that the pump has stopped itself from working to prevent further damage via a cut-off switch found inside the pump. Also, if the filter or diffuser is blocked, the sound levels coming from the pump will rise as they are overheating and therefore working at a faster rate. This will lead to them eventually splitting. Diaphragms and filters should be changed every 12 months minimum

    Medo Pumps

    Medo pumps do not have a warning light, when the pump is experiencing problems it will dispense brown dust before the thermos switch cuts itself off to ensure the pump does not over heat. In this instance, it is typically the pistons that will require changing. The Pistons should be changed every 3-4 years and the filter should be changed every 12 months.


    HiBlow pumps have an automatic cut of switch which will turn the pump off if there is a fault, for example split diaphragms. The diaphragms should be changed every 2-3 years minimum. The filter should be changed every 12 months.

    Other information:

    The diffuser can often be blocked following the accumulation of excessive amounts of wipes and other non-degradable items. As these wrap themselves around the end of the diffuser, the air pump has a lot less space to blow air through, causing the pump to work faster, become noisier and overheat, eventually resulting in the pump failure if the problem is not corrected.

    The air pump typically operates at a very low sound level and isn’t hot to touch, so it won’t be difficult to diagnose a problem.

    The Integral Alarm

    The alarm fitted with all standard units will also tell you if there is a problem with your pump.
    If you have a gravity fed system, the alarm will bleep once for loss power, this is if there is no electrical current flowing to the pump.
    It will bleep twice to signify an issue regarding air pressure. This can be caused by loose jubilee clips, the air hose not being properly attached to the pump or an oversensitive pressure switch.

    In pumped systems, the alarm signifies the same possible problems as a gravity fed unit.

    However, a pumped alarm not only informs you of loss of power and air pressure, but also a high water level. This is signified by three bleeps. If the pumped alarm is bleeping three times, it is essential that you get in contact with us as your unit will be likely to flood.
